The MEDITERRANEAN DIET is the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea .

KEY COMPONENTS of the Mediterranean diet include :
1. Eating generous amounts of fruits and vegetables daily .
2. Consuming healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil avocadoes in moderation .
3. Eating small portions of nuts .
4. Drinking red wine , in moderation .
5. Consuming very little red meat , if at all .
6. Eating fish on a regular basis .
7. Goat cheese is preferred choice over other cheeses .
8. Whole grain bread is eaten without butter or margerines , which contain saturated or trans fats , because these contribute to heart disease .
